Headaches - Migraines
Don't put up with them!
Sick and tired of head pain, tension headaches and migraines interfering with your life? Headaches are one of the most common problems the human race suffers from.
There is a different way to manage these problems without drugs or neck manipulations.
At Southside Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Centre, we have a special interest in the assessment, diagnosis and management of primary headache disorders.
Phillip Richardson has completed specialised training on the latest physical protocols for the treatment and self-management of tension headaches, migraine and cluster headaches. By applying these techniques, many sufferers have become drug-free.
What causes headaches?
There are many reasons why headaches develop. Neuro-scientists have long recognised that the underlying cause of many types of headache is an overactive and sensitised brainstem. The brainstem filters sensations (information) from the body on the way to the brain. The nerves of the top three vertebrae of the neck (0-C1, C1-C2, C2-C3) connect with the brainstem. The brainstem can become over sensitised by constant pain messages from these nerves. If the joints of the top three vertebrae are not functioning properly, they become irritable and via their nerves, send out their pain messages to the sensitised brainstem, which then refers exaggerated pain messages to the head and face which are felt as headaches.
The first step to ascertain the cause of this problem is a skillful assessment of the upper neck. This also ensures the highest standards of patient safety are maintained. If it is determined the upper neck is contributing to the headaches, management involves gentle, sustained pressure on selected joints and ligaments. This action resolves the dysfunction of the vertebrae. Often some resolution is obtained in the initial session.
Our promise is: "If significant improvement is not achieved within 3 - 4 sessions we will not continue the program."
