Why are pelvic floor muscles (PFMs) important for men?
Men of all ages should have strong pelvic floor muscles - it has long been recognised the role of the PFMs are of concern to women, particularly following childbirth - but for men, it is a subject hardly ever discussed or even regarded as significant for them.
Where are the PFMs?
They are thin sheets of muscles stretching like a hammock from the tailbone at the back, to the pubic bone at the front and through which the urinary tract and bowel pass.
What do they do?
- Provide support for the pelvic and lower abdominal organs
- Provide control for the opening and closing of the bladder and bowel
- Assist abdominal and back muscles to support your spine - a major prevention for low back pain
What do strong pelvic floor muscles mean for you?
- Minimises the occurrence of bladder and/or bowel incontinence when coughing, sneezing or lifting and as you age
- Promotes good control when you need to "go" urgently
- Helps reduce back pain
- Increases social confidence and quality of life by having good bladder and bowel control
