Achieving your fitness goals in 2021

At the start of a new year we often decide to set ourselves fitness related goals to achieve. However, it has been found that 80% of New Year’s resolutions fail, and for the majority of people that is by mid-February.

We have all heard of SMART goals, but if you really think about your goal for 2021 have you designed it in this way? That means the goal needs to be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-specific.

That means “I want to be fitter” does not count!

Maybe “I would like to increase my cardiovascular fitness and running ability in order to be able to run the Sutherland to Surf this July” would be better. It specifies the fitness, which is measurable. We know the Sutherland to Surf is 11km and is generally held in July, so it is also relevant and time-specific.

Now on top of this overall goal, which may seem overwhelming at the start of the year, it is important to break this long-term goal down into smaller short-term goals. Our team of university trained Physiotherapists and Exercise Physiologists at Southside Physiotherapy can assess your baseline fitness and help you to develop short-term goals to achieve to build towards your long-term goal.

This is just one example. Southside Physiotherapy clinicians are able to analyse your running technique and put you through our Running Clinic if you have a running-related goal. This will improve your running ability immensely. We can help with any fitness-related goal you may wish to achieve.

If you have a pre-existing injury, or any niggles, our Physiotherapists can assess your injury and ensure adequate rehabilitation has been achieved so that you can work towards your fitness goals with a reduced risk of re-injury.

Our Exercise Physiologists are trained to prescribe exercise as a form of medicine for a wide range of chronic health conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes and osteoarthritis, and to help people develop an exercise program that will suit them and the goals they wish to achieve. If you are not sure on what exercises are suitable for you to perform or just don’t know where to start, our Exercise Physiologists can help you with this.

At Southside Physiotherapy we can offer general strength and conditioning, Running Clinic, as well as both mat-work and equipment based exercise classes. Our rehabilitation gymnasium is purpose-built, small and personable. Each person will be assessed at their initial visit, after which an individualised program will be developed to help you reach your fitness goals.
