What is Core Strength?
The “core” is made up of four deep internal muscles within the abdomen region which connects to the spine, pelvis and ribcage. These muscles work together to stabilise the spine and pelvis at rest and during movement, help to maintain good posture, and provide a stable base for all leg and arm movements.
What are the benefits of participating in a Group Exercise session?
Group Exercise sessions incorporate Pilates-style concepts with other specific targeted exercises which train the body’s deep postural muscles. Our classes are low impact and require focused attention on the exercise to develop movement awareness. You will learn to move correctly to minimise the strain on your body and strengthen the muscles needed to function in your everyday life.
Are Group Exercise sessions right for me?
Yes! All of our sessions are appropriate for people of varying physical capacity. The exercises are adapted to each individual, based on the initial assessment findings conducted prior to class participation.
Our program is ideal for anyone who has experienced:
- Lower back, upper back or neck pain
- Musculoskeletal injuries
- Sporting injuries
- Postural problems
What to expect from the Group Exercise program at Southside Physiotherapy
A compulsory, specialised initial assessment and training session, conducted by a physiotherapist or exercise physiologist.
This allows you to develop the CORRECT technique and understanding of our exercise principles prior to starting the program (breathing technique, pelvic floor activation and core activation). It includes the use of our Real-Time Ultrasound machine to effectively assess and teach core activation. It is essential to be able to correctly activate and utilise the deep core muscles before any progression is attempted otherwise other large, more superficial muscle groups will overcompensate.
The sessions are largely floor-based and incorporate the use of bands and/or light hand weights. You will also be re-assessed one-on-one at least once every 12 months. This allows us to monitor your progress and make significant changes to your program if necessary.
Equipment Sessions
Here at Southside Physiotherapy, we have four Pilates reformers, as well as a Pilates Wundachair, Rip60 suspension trainers, a Surfset board and many other challenging pieces of equipment.
The reformer is the most recognisable and popular piece of equipment in the Pilates realm. Its versatility is only limited by the imagination.
We offer an initial assessment, group sessions, duets and individual sessions using our extensive range of equipment to meet your health and fitness goals. Whether you suffer from lower back pain or are recovering from an injury (new or old), want to improve your flexibility and mobility, have a goal you want to reach or just want a full-body workout, then these sessions have you covered.
Following the initial assessment, an individualised program is designed to:
- Increase strength
- Improve flexibility
- Correct postural alignment and movement patterns
- Increase balance and body awareness
- Reduce muscular pain and stiffness
- Give you a full-body workout
The equipment we use opens up the class to a plethora of exercises that work different muscles through a large range of movement to achieve your goals.
In the famous words of Joseph Pilates:
“In 10 sessions you will feel the difference, in 20 you will see the difference and in 30, you’ll be on your way to having a whole new body.”
