What is Exercise Physiology?

Exercise Physiology is a healthcare service that uses exercise as medicine. Accredited Exercise Physiologists (EPs) are university-trained professionals who specialise in designing and delivering safe, effective exercise programs to improve health, function, and quality of life.

Unlike a generic fitness program, an EP program is:

  • Evidence-based – grounded in research to address specific conditions or goals.

  • Individually tailored – designed for your unique needs, fitness level, and medical history.

  • Safe and structured – ensuring correct technique and progressive results under professional guidance.

What is the Difference Between Exercise Physiology and Personal Training

Exercise Physiology and Personal Training both use exercise to improve health but they differ in scope and expertise. Exercise Physiologists are university-qualified allied health professionals who design safe, evidence-based programs for people with injuries, chronic health conditions or post-surgery recovery, and their services may be eligible for Medicare or private health rebates.

Personal Trainers, on the other hand, focus on fitness, strength and general wellbeing for healthy individuals without complex medical needs.

Who is Exercise Physiology suitable for?

Exercise Physiology is suitable for anyone who wants to use exercise to improve their health – not just athletes. An Exercise Physiologist can help in the management of:

  • Heart disease & Stroke

  • Diabetes (Type 1, Type 2, Gestational)

  • Neurological conditions (Parkinson’s, MS)

  • COPD

  • Osteoporosis & osteopenia

  • Reduce pain in those with osteoarthritis and chronic pain conditions

  • Pre- and post- natal conditioning, including gestational diabetes management

  • Women’s health conditions (PCOS, endometriosis)

When you see a Exercise Physiologist at Southside Physiotherapy Cronulla, you can expect:

  • A comprehensive initial assessment to understand your health, goals, and limitations

  • A personalised exercise plan tailored specifically to you

  • Ongoing support, motivation, and progress reviews

  • Education on how to move well and take charge of your health

No GP referral is required for an Exercise Physiology appointment.

Many clients may also be eligible for Medicare or private health rebates.
